Worthless Blog Comments
I’ve noticed a new form of comment spam recently. It’s not that it’s outright spam, and that’s what makes it a menace. It’s when people write something like, thanks lots of good information. Or, that gave me something to think about. It’s not always obvious that they are spamming your blog. I’ve been deleting these kind of comments that don’t move the conversation forward. If what I wrote has impacted you, say how, be specific. Just making a random observation that could apply to anything at all is worthless.
Has anyone else noticed more of these marginal comments? Comments that usually have an alterior motive? (if not just for a link to their site).

I’ve noticed this a bit too. In wordpress there is an option for a math question you can add to the comment box before allowing visitors to submit. You can also moderate any comments that have links in them (I’m sure you already do this). Hopefully some of this helps. Let me know if you find other alternatives - it can be a big waste to monitor spam.

The first thing I learned about comments is:
This is MY blog. Anything that I don’t like, even a little bit, I can delete. This is NOT a democracy. This is a totalitarian regime and I’m in charge.
Most of the time I try to be a benevolent leader, but the freedom of knowing that I can delete anything has made me less worried about “damaging the conversation.”
Your weblog is NOT a forum. It’s YOURS and you can do whatever you want with it.
Giving myself that permission helped me a lot.

The one that bugs me the most is “Although I don’t agree 100% I really like your information on this topic” and its followed up with a useless keyword anchored up. And if you look in your spam filter you have 50 like this with different words. JUST BLOCK THE IP! It’s very annoying, but since using the spam tools that wordpress offers makes it almost 100% effective in filtering out the spam…

Yeah, people who leave comments for the specific purpose getting a link really tick me off. Speaking of which I just found your site and added a link to in a community directory called ProvoUtah.US. Let me know if you want it changed or removed.
Hipocracy also riles me.
I hate mirrors as well. When other people look in a mirror, they see themselves. I just see an empty space. Garlic and crosses also do me in, and don’t get me started on daylight or silver bullets.
