The Two Kinds of Dreamers

Everyone tells you to “follow your dreams” which to some people is like telling them there is no such thing as gravity. They could hurt themselves. Mostly though, they just waste a lot of money and time creating and chasing dreams. The dreams leave everyone around them disappointed. Dreamers are often really good at describing their dreams and convincing you that they are real.

There are two types of dreamers. One kind is expensive to be, because their dreams have no end and require no actual work. These are really just thoughts, like wishes. These dreamers listen to something like “The Secret” and think all they have to do is think about something vividly enough or really really want it and poof, it appears.

For example, many people spend a lot of money on all sorts of internet marketing programs hoping they will magically make money online without really working at it. Internet marketing gurus capitalize on these types selling them programs that are way too advanced for a beginner. Or, worse, they are scams designed to sell a dream of making money online, and offer little value.

The gurus leave out vital information and so confuse people more than help. But people still believe in them even when the evidence shows they aren’t making money by following the guru’s advice. They probably won’t ever make a penny. But they still think they will, and keep buying into the dream again and again. Other people simply don’t know but once they see the evidence they realize they’ve been scammed they begin to seek real direction.

The other kind of dreamer is very distinct. There ideas may also seem impractical or look unobtainable and large. However, this kind of person actually analyzes and decides on actions to take to reach their goals. It’s no matter that it may take time because their dreams are investments in a future they want.

Some dreams are squelched by work, and some are realized by work. Try telling a dreamer that they won’t lose weight if they don’t exercise and eat whatever they want. This time of dreamer gets upset with you – when their dreams aren’t realized you get blamed. That’s because these dreams aren’t attached to responsibility. They are fantasy. If you start getting mad at someone else or blaming them, rather than taking action, that’s a good indicator you are living in fantasy.

If we could get paid to think of ideas and daydream, some of us would’ve been rich a long time ago. In reality all of the people I know worked hard for what they have. Really hard. For a long time. That doesn’t mean they hated their work and thought it drudgery. No, they love what they do. But there are parts that are still work even for them (like for me, it’s accounting: part of owning a business, but something I’d rather ignore).

How do you know if you’re being sold a dream or if something is obtainable? Look for what is required. If someone promises you something will happen that is very aggressive but has no real plan behind it, beware. If making money takes very little action and you’re not asked to do something (keep commitments), beware.

I don’t think it’s unethical to sell dreams. People want to buy them. There is a good market for dreams. They make people feel good. It’s easy to dodge responsibility for them. There is nothing required but a belief. Even legitimate products are marketed this way, to get people to take action. There is a real benefit beyond the dream though.

Being a bit of a dreamer myself, I attract other dreamers. But I always watch for what dreams are just for fun or part of being creative, or simply delusional, and what is real and obtainable.

The people with obtainable dreams are easy to spot: the person is willing to invest more than money or belief alone. They are willing to invest consistent time and effort. They will sacrifice (give up what they want now for something else later) for it.

And even if the outcome turns out different than what they imagined at first, they are not moving in circles repeating the same things over and over again. They are progressing. Where they are today is not a version of where they were yesterday. It’s something unique. That is the kind of dreamer I admire. The other kind is entertaining sometimes, but it’s a bad way to live a life.

What I Usually Get My Mom for Mother’s Day

Flowers…most years that is what I get my mom for mother’s day…but this year (wait, I can’t say. What if she reads this?).

Thank goodness for overnight shipping or I’d never make it in time. My mom is no nonsense.

My favorite quote from her is: “Janet isn’t a complacent person, and she doesn’t let us be either.” I rarely remember things like this but she said it many years ago and I haven’t forgotten.

Thanks for being my mom…you’re where I get my social side and that no nonsense part of me (in case you are reading…and if you are, could you leave a comment, just click the comment link below).

My Campaign: Get the Domain Name www.JeffBarr.com

Here is another campaign. I haven’t thought of my blog as a tool for activism but this week’s theme seems to be taking it that way. It’s domain name activism. Pretty different from other activism I’ve done in the past (like I have a small campaign at work that needs some imagination…maybe I’ll start leaving signs by the supervisor’s desk that say “we miss the resource guys – bring them back!” or to get really crazy maybe a bunch of us can make signs and stage a 10 min. protest).

I blogged how I wish I owned the domain name www.newspapergirl.com. I really hate telling people it’s like girl but without the “i”. The very next day I got an email from my friend Jeff Barr (you should check out what he’s working on in Second Life – he’s a pioneer!).

Jeff bought my domain name and gave it to me with a “happy early birthday!” email. I’m elated! So as soon as I get a chance I’m going to point it to this blog. And one day, I’m going to get a newspapergirl logo. Then next a custom design. And a static front page of my different projects.

Yes, so here is your challenge, if you choose to accept it: help me return Jeff’s favor. I want to get www.JeffBarr.com and return it to its rightful owner, Jeff Barr himself. It is owned by a registry in Belize. Are any of my readers skilled in buying domain names from other countries (I could use your help on another thing too)? We need a domain name Robin Hood of sorts.

Yes, Paul Wilson is still doing the domain name challenge! You can join that campaign too.

There are all sorts of serious campaigns in the world. This one is a relatively light and fun one. Please, tips for recovering domain names from registrars in other countries below…And, let’s get www.JeffBarr.com for Jeff.

Promote your New Web Site by Writing Articles

This was written by request…and kudos to Wilson Web for help on the list of article submission sites.

I’m a big fan of using online press releases for building your reputation, to get the word out, and for links and traffic to your web site. However, what do you do when you don’t have newsworthy things happening in your business? You write articles. It’s another way to promote your web site. And it’s free.

Most article submission sites do not let you put links in your article but they do let you create a bio at the bottom of your article with a link. You can get quality links to your web site by getting links on high ranking article submission sites and on sites that pick up your article for reprint on their web site.

But don’t go crazy. If you submit your article to too many article sites it can hurt you. So concentrate on a few of the good sites.

Here are article submission sites with a pagerank of 6 or more

EzineArticles: Alexa score of 499 (lower is better)
ArticleDashboard: Alexa score of 5,255
iSnare: Alexa score of 8,791
SelfGrowth: Alexa score of 9,653
Buzzle: Alexa score of 9,698
ArticleCity: 11,526
ArticlesFactory: (pagerank of 7) Alexa score of 30,664

Here is another article by my friend Mat about article submission sites. Also, one by another friend Nate about “how writing articles sets your web site apart.” For a new web site that is trying to build traffic and trust online, they are a good idea.

Tip: Use keywords you want to be ranked for in the article title and repeated in the article itself. Don’t use general keywords that you have no hope of ranking on search engines for (too much competition). That means using 2-5 word phrases that are more specific.

What has been your experience? Have you had good results from writing articles?

Backcountry.com Getting Bought Out

Backcountry.com is being bought out by Colorado-based Liberty Media Corp. They says not much will change but the company will help Backcountry.com grow even faster. They expect 500% growth next year. Backcountry.com is based in Utah.

Backcountry.com is an official sponsor of Seth Godin’s trip to Utah. They are sending many of their employees. Backcountry does not often sponsor events so that’s a big deal. If you live near Utah, sign up to hear Seth speak on Thursday, May 24, 2007 in Salt Lake City.

Are Domain Names Stolen?

My business partner Paul Wilson and I have noticed a trend that is disturbing. We search to see if a domain name is taken. It’s open. We don’t reserve it and go back and search for it again. Almost without fail, a while later, it is reserved. We became suspicious. We think registrars track searches and reserve any domain name with interest.

Paul decided to do an experiment to test his theory. He is asking people to search GoDaddy and the like for absurd domain names. Then he’ll see if they get reserved. Read about it and join the effort.

Here’s my confession: I’m annoyed that someone bought Newspapergirl with the “i”. I made up the word newspapergrl. I never thought it would be popular or I would’ve spelled girl out instead of the 80s version – grl. If you own www.newspapergirl.com, my birthday is in January. It would make a nice present.

Tip: If you have a common name make up a unique version of your name just for the search engines. For example, Phil Burns. He distinguishes himself online by his area code. He is known as Phil801. If you do a Google search on Phil 801, you’ll see what I mean. If your name is really common, like Paul Wilson, maybe you should be Paul801.

Whatever you do, don’t search on your idea for a domain name several times before you decide to buy it.

Free Online Photo Editors

If you are looking for a quick way to edit your images online, these free online photo editors are lifesavers. I especially like SnipShot because you can get an actual URL for your image (no need to ftp your image to your web host).

Today I’m looking at Picnik (more features, easier to use but not sure if you get a URL for your image). These are great because I think just about all software is weak compared to Photoshop. I can’t stand Paint or Word Photo editor. These are great alternatives if you don’t need something as powerful as Photoshop.

Here is a list of free online photo editors:
Fauxto
Picnik – Posts images directly to Flickr and other photo sites
Picture2Life
Pixenate
Snipshot

SnipShot Tutorial: – Getting a URL for a picture
1. Open an image (click browse) go to “My Pictures” or wherever you have saved your picture.
2. Edit or manipulate your picture. Save it, using the button in the top right hand corner.
3. Click on webshots. Find the “direct link” option at the bottom. Copy the image URL in the box. Paste the URL in your blog (go into the code or HTML) and type this: img src=”PASTE THE URL HERE” put a < sign before and a > sign after.

If you have more free time than I do, this article goes over the features of each photo editing site in depth.

Hope this helps!

Janets of the World Unite on MySpace

Lots of spam email on my MySpace page recently. I usually don’t add someone as a friend unless I know them or of them. I made an exception on this one, even though the video on the page wasn’t my style at…why?

Well, the person who made the page is named Craig (one of my brother’s name). It says they are a capricorn (me too). And they go by Planet Janet. I simply couldn’t resist. I added her (really a him) to my friends list.

Here’s the funny explanation:

Hi, my name is Craig, and I started this page as a way for people to come together based on something we all have and can ‘identify’ with, our name! We did a Planet Craig on myspace and it has been a lot of fun, so I hope you enjoy being a part of this page and if it grows a lot, we can have a Janet of the Week blog, groups, etc. Have a nice day!

Maybe I can be Janet of the week sometime.

SEO tip for MySpace: use your MySpace blog to create anchored links using your main keywords to your blog or web sites. That’s usually the extent of it for me…since MySpace is one of the most highly trafficked social media sites.

Online Excellence: The 2007 Webby Awards

“With nearly 70 categories, Website entries make up the majority of Webby Awards Winners, Nominees and Honorees. Some are beautiful to look at and interact with. Others are a testament to usability and functionality. And a handful excel across the board. To be selected among the best is an incredible achievement worthy of praise — and perhaps a little bragging.”

I noticed Paidcontent is on the list…if you need some new blog or online reading material, this is a good place to start.

Yes Seth Godin is Coming to Utah this Month

I blogged about this prematurely and then in a haste, deleted the post. Now that I have a minute I want to tell everyone in Utah or close to Utah about it.

Quoting Wikipedia: “Seth Godin is known for a very visual, personal, and dynamic speaking style that has earned him a large following. He is the author of a popular blog and several books on how ideas spread.”

WHAT: Seth Godin, best-selling author of The Dip, and a man with the word God in his last name
WHEN: Thursday, May 24, 2004 1-4pm at the Salt Palace at 100 West South Temple, in Salt Lake City. Networking and head shaving (get your Seth Godin tickets)
HOW MUCH: Just $50 and you get 5 copies of his book and free food, and entertainment (when he shaves heads for our top sponsors!). You won’t find a deal like this very often. Plus what is the price of fun?
Even more details including driving directions

Backcountry.com is sending a bunch of employees. We’ve had great sponsors and we’re looking for more. Like a sign company.

Ash showed his Seth love by making his car into an announcement of the event.
