Janet,
In addition to a potential cash influx, it seems there might be some wisdom and insight gained for you as a blogger and an internet marketing coach.
I say do it.
If that seems too tacky, have you looked into text-link ads?
Good Luck!
If you need help with logo design, let me know. My mom tells me that I am good at that kinda thing.

I second John, Do it! Money is good!
It’s so hot when a babe can pay her mortgage with adsense. Grrr!
As long as readers are able to distinguish between content and ads with a glance at your blog as say go for it. But avoid over optimizing AdSense because you will loose readers.
The advantage of adsense is that you don’t have to do anything. It analyzes your site, and looks at what the user is doing, then displays the ads.
As for writing, I find that I end up make more compromises for affiliate ads than I do with Google. With Google, I just concentrate on the content.
