High Expectations and Ethics
“We have set our expectations so high that it’s causing societal problems, such as a breakdown in ethics.”
- Utah Business Magazine, “Industry Outlook”
Expectations. Raising the bar. Our barometer of what’s important is messed up. Bottom line thinking.
One of my favorite quotes is:
“Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he’s been robbed. The fact is that most putts don’t drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to be just people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is like an old time rail journey…delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed.” –Gordon B. Hinckley
The beautiful vistas are what we live for. This reminds me of Nancy Griffith’s line, “they never want the rain to come or the weather to get colder”. We want clear sunny skies in life and yet we can’t fully appreciate them unless we have other weather too.
