Newspaper Answers – Drupal or WordPress
Someone asked me what I recommended to use as a CMS for a small newspaper (probably on a small budget). I don’t know so I asked my brother who works for a newspaper technology company. He suggested looking at Escenic and Publicus.
I also asked my Twitter network (you’ll see how valuable Twitter network can be for quick feedback, I got this in a few minutes after asking, thank you everyone).
It’s tough to summarize all of the replies, so I’m posting what I got back.

HeloNix @NewspaperGrl TYPO3 has a good news extension, but also has a pretty steep learning curve. Once it’s setup, it’s easy to manage content.

WebsiteAnalyst @NewspaperGrl Small paper I would recommend Drupal, its more of a framework that’s going to scale better than WordPress

PaulWilson @NewspaperGrl: I am a little bias but wordpress has a stronger community than the other open source products. Plus, it’s easier to use.

Drupal and Joomla are a nightmare to use. WordPress is far easier.

So, I thought I’d post here since there is more room than Twitter’s 140 character limit.
I’ve developed sites with both Drupal and WordPress (among many other CMS systems in PHP, .NET, Python & Ruby). From my perspective, I’d probably choose Drupal for a newspaper. The short version is that Drupal can better handle publishing scenario where there are authors and editors contributing to topical articles. Drupal allows for a lot more breadth in application especially as the user’s roles come into play (Lots of authors, contributors, audience members interacting in much more diverse ways with a broader set of content).
WordPress is great for Blogs and simpler sites that are pretty narrow in topic (a main feed with a handfull of categories and only a few authors).

Janet,
I would definitely recommend Drupal. Once you unlock what it can do it’s pretty simple but setup not only to work for publishing things into a newspaper like format but it’s perfect to extend into a social network. I think you’d have to modify WordPress too heavily to make it work where Drupal is a lot easier to extend and make work.
