If you’re new (or not new) to social media, there are some things you can do to make people angry. Here is your guide to pissing people off on web sites like Twitter, Facebook, Digg or other sites.

7 Ways to Piss People Off on Social Media Sites

  1. Always blog about your product, your company, tools, etc.
  2. Make sure all links go back to your site.
  3. Leave comments about yourself on blogs.
  4. Incessantly invite friends to become a fan of you or your company on Facebook.
  5. IM people on Digg asking them to link to you.
  6. Put auto DMs on Twitter that are not personalized & link to spammy sites.
  7. Try to stifle or censor people when they say things you don’t like about you (or your business) on social media sites.

And the winner is…

The WORST thing most people can do to piss people on Social Media Sites:

Aggressive Self Promotion

Don’t do it (unless you want to piss people off).

Nice post, great list. I am wondering if you left off something from that list, though.

  2. NewspaperGirl Says:

David, and what is it that I left off? You were there, right?

I left off: SPAM. Don’t do it.

Nice list. If you look at the list, it all relates to “me, me, me”. All of them are just different ways of promoting yourself. Social media is building relationships and has nothing to do with “me,me,me”. Too bad not everyone gets that!

this mostly applies to #4, but to the rest as well: it’s a good idea to keep separate accounts for close personal contacts and business purposes.

So your saying that creating a Facebook for your business and asking your friends to simply hit like to help your business is wrong or annoying? You have much to learn about marketing sweetie. Although I get your point, some people depend on free marketing, and do so on social sites. Most companies have facebook and twitter accounts, I see nothing wrong with asking people, especially friends to help out. Also, what is the point of having a blog for your business, if you don’t blog about what you do, and what you can offer? And if I am going to link anyone, wouldn’t it be my own site? I think you need to be a bit more specific when addressing such issues, because many of the things you say are annoying are common coin for the independant business owner, who doesn’t have much funds for marketing. Infact, these sites encourage such behavior. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am not ranting, just stating what I feel to be inaccurate or, rather misleading in your post. ;)
