Eight Sleep – a smart mattress for your smart home
Can you imagine being able to heat or cool your mattress with the sound of your voice? To have a truly smart home your bedding has to be connected too, right? I love the innovation of Eight mattress. It’s a smart mattress that’s now part of a smart home. They’re one of the few mattress companies who I see innovating in the space by crossing over from online bed in a box niche to the smart home category.
The company says they saw a way to reach some of the over 10 million people (me included) who use Amazon Echo and Dot. Or, you could use the newest version of Amazon’s Fire HD 10 tablet as an Echo. All of Eight’s smart sleep-tech products will now integrate with the Amazon Echo and Dot. The company plans to add even more sleep skills to the Amazon Alexa app. Eight says their smart mattress and bedding will be integrated with any IoT device via IFTTT so you can automate scenarios.
Sample Alexa Commands
With the new integration, you can say things like,
“Alexa, warm up my bed”
“Alexa, how did I sleep last night?”
“Alexa, what’s my sleep score?”
Even cooler, if one side of the bed too cold, you can simply say, “Alexa, warm up the left side of the bed”, or “Alexa, my bed is too cold”. You can also tell Alexa to heat to the level you want, or even set it at a different heat setting for each side of the bed. This is very important to me. I’ve tested a BedJet which is more like a fan for your bed that sends warm air or cooler air but it doesn’t have any smart features, just a simple app.
The obvious next commands include being able to dim your lights (which I do now with Phillips Hue smart lights via the app or wireless control) or set it to gently wake you up without an alarm clock by telling Alexa, “Wake me up by 7:15am”. Already Eight has this tech, which is more than an alarm clock though because it looks at your lightest sleep stage and wakes you up based on that. The time you’re awakened is based on data on your movement patterns so it can adjust each day to the optimal timing.
Eight Sleep tracks data like hours slept, percentage of tossing and turning, percentage of deep sleep, etc. With the data you can find patterns to help you sleep better.
Maybe at some point Eight will track calories or your eating habits and exercise to see how they impact sleep. Or even your moods for feedback about mental health. Stress can make you toss, turn and even lose sleep. The amount of caffeine you eat/drink the timing of it can affect sleep dramatically, as can rise/fall of blood sugar. Of course I start to think about medical implications like sleep apnea or snoring. What if you’re sweating, could it automatically turn the warming down or off? Even if Eight cannot do all of this, if it could integrate with tech that can it would give you a more holistic view of sleep.
A Smart Mattress that Gives you Tech for Same Cost or Less Than Other Online Mattress Brands
Now an Eight bed will be less dependent on using your smartphone (aside from viewing the data or changing the settings) which has been a complaint in the past. “Was using a Smart watch before but this is so much better. More accurate more data and a bed warmer.” Unlike Fitbit or other wearable, you can gather sleep data without having to actually wear anything.
What makes Eight appealing is that it’s priced the same or lower than a regular mattress but you get the tech. Just to clarify, the actual mattress isn’t smart, it’s the sensors and cover that come with (or that you can buy separately) that has the smart features. In essence, Eight’s mattresses are all foam with 2″ of memory foam on the second layer. The Mars has coils. If there’s a + in front of the name it’s the package with the mattress cover, otherwise it’s only the mattress.
If you’re interested in Eight now’s a good time to get one.

If you live in New York City or are visiting you can try out the mattress in person.
Eight has three mattresses and a smart cover that turns any mattress into a smart bed. Sensors in the cover track sleep, can heat with dual zones and integrate with any smart home device.
Eight does sell pillows and sheets but they’re not part of the Alexa integration.
